On This Week’s Episode: Teri and Pam Share Their Tips on How to Start a Business

[00:00:00] You’re listening to Business Besties and books. I’m Pam Grice and I’m here with my friend Teri Houghton. We are so excited that you’re here. We are business besties and we are here to talk to you about all things regarding business and how we can help you grow your business. So today we’re gonna talk about being an entrepreneur.

[00:00:27] You wanna be an entrepreneur? Where do you start? How do you start? And our experience with startin businesses, I think this is the very first place most business owners get stuck. This is the point you either make it past or you don’t. And so often people don’t make it past this point.

[00:00:50] So I’m excited to be tackling what’s the first step to take, what to do, and how to get rolling. Let’s address the first thing that a lot [00:01:00] of times is rolling around an entrepreneur’s mind, typically there’s a passion that they have.

[00:01:13] They know what they want their business to be about, and then they have to choose a name and they have to figure out what to do. So I think the hard part is that there are so many first things to do that people don’t understand. So I’d like to look at this in different categories.

[00:01:34] So what do you need to do for your own business to get started? What space do you need to be in to get started? What’s the first kind of administrative thing you need to do for your business and how do you even encapsulate the vision in the first place? So first you need to have your mind in the right space where you’re looking at your business.

[00:01:53] As a business, it’s okay to be passionate about what you wanna do. In fact, that’s awesome. But looking at your [00:02:00] business as I’m into this to make money and so I’m gonna make decisions not to make me feel good and this, doing things that

[00:02:12] are in flow and super easy, but you have to make the hard decisions as well. And so getting your mindset in that mindset of, I’m a business owner, I’m A  CEO now, and the goal of a business is to A: make money and B: serve my people.  And I think the other thing is looking at your life. I think there can be this part of life that when we think of entrepreneurs, we aren’t really thinking about, Hey, they’re at their desks at eight o’clock and they’re there till five.

[00:02:43] If you’re working a business from eight to noon to really sit down and look at your calendar, and when Pam says it’s a business, you want it to make money, but in order to do that, what is your present? What are time and mental space going to look like in your business. If you’re [00:03:00] a mom of young kids, it literally might look like you are working from nine till midnight every day. It looks different for all of us and that’s the flexibility we like, but there is work time. Definitely setting aside that time and say this is when I’m gonna be working, this is when I’m gonna be working, this is where I’m gonna be working and setting those boundaries with the people in your life too. To be like when the doors closed I’m working, or when I’m sitting at the dining room table, when everyone’s done with their homework

[00:03:30] Mom’s working, whatever it needs to look like for you. Putting aside that time, because when you’re working for someone else, it’s super easy. You either go to the office or you have your work time, you have other people putting expectations on you. But when you start your own business,  you’re either gonna go in one of two directions.

[00:03:46] You’re either gonna become a workaholic and work all of the time and not have any boundaries, or you’re gonna set healthy boundaries and you’re gonna set yourself up okay. Or the worst option would be you don’t set boundaries and you also don’t [00:04:00] hold yourself accountable, and so you don’t set time aside and then everything falls apart.
